Algernon

character Algernon (birthname unknown) is a renowned weapons engineer and technological innovator, particularly renowned for his revolutionary designs in advanced weaponry and defence systems during the late 21st century. Their work is characterised by an unconventional approach to engineering problems, which is attributed to their distinctive neurocognitive profile.

The circumstances of Algernon's early life remain largely unconfirmed. At an early age, they were placed under the control of arms dealer Viktor Mertzger, who was able to discern and capitalise on his exceptional intellectual abilities. During his period of captivity, Algernon developed a multitude of pioneering technologies that markedly transformed the landscape of contemporary warfare.

Liberation

In the aftermath of Mertzger's downfall, Algernon made the unparalleled decision to remain in their erstwhile prison-workshop within the Foundation settlement, largely unaltered. Despite their legal and physical freedom to leave, they exhibit symptoms indicative of profound institutional trauma and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), manifesting as an inability to venture beyond the confines of their familiar workspace.

Foundation

The workshop, comprising a vast network of machinery and incomplete projects, serves as both a refuge and a self-imposed prison. Algernon maintains minimal human contact, primarily communicating through a modified termcom system he designed. Their discourse is largely confined to technical specifications, engineering challenges, and weapon systems, indicating a notable impediment in engaging in informal social interaction.

Notwithstanding these constraints, Algernon has established a distinctive collaborative relationship with Dr. Arnand Torvenius, the Foundation's resident physician. Their joint endeavours concentrate on the nexus of biotechnology and mechanical engineering. Frequent consultations between the two have led to the development of innovative solutions, including microscale surgical instruments and neural interface prosthetics. However, attempts by Dr. Torvenius to address Algernon's psychological well-being are typically met with a preference for technical discourse.
